We are smack in the thick of political activity as the key players race towards the finish line in the August general elections.

The frenzy is evident and professors and illiterates alike, are speaking the same language as would first-class graduates from the University of Hard Knocks.

But one thing holds true. The season will pass and like seaweed washed ashore, many shall be left stranded when things move on. Most likely, many will be penniless and without a steady clientele for all the bridges will have been burned and long washed away.

Politics thrives on sharp emotions. The same part of your mind that stores politically ignited emotions is the one that stores customer feelings about your business. One wrong sentence can make you lose business.

So, as we talk politics, let us remain guarded and sensitive, for our surroundings have eyes and ears. If you are a businessman, it is prudent to engage your neutral gear and resist the temptations to share your opinions. M-pesa your preferred candidate in silence and go about with your business dealings.

Make a mental note of any business outfit today that has openly taken sides. Review them in December for business performance. Regardless of who wins, they will return mixed results. Many will have to change the faces of organizations manifested through CEOs.

There is little difference between a drunkard and a fully charged political operative. The drunkard, six bottles down the road, will see much beauty before his eyes. The same lady he had disdainfully dismissed as ugly while sobber, now looks like a Miss Kenya finalist.

The political operative will take down anyone opposed to his preferred candidate in a manner likely to disturb the peace. But when both recover from their intoxications, they confess to all about their misjudgements.

It is these misjudgements that have a lasting impact on business because they remain embedded in the emotional store of our brain. That is the same place that business brands sit. Rebranding is expensive and has no guarantees.

So, remain civil about the goings-on and live to see another day. No emotion should be expressed with more vigor than that for your business.
